CANZONERI TOPS MASSEY AT THE ARENA

Lightweight champion Tony Canzoneri faced South Philly's Lew Massey in a non-title bout, at the Philadelphia Arena before 5,000 fans on this day in 1932. The tough man from Slidell, Louisiana jumped out to a quick start, flooring Massey with booming right hands in the second round. Massey climbed up after the onslaught and showed his Philly grit. He even bounced back nicely, taking the third and fourth rounds, and battling even in the fifth before Canzoneri began to show his stuff again. Tony started to steamroll Massey in the sixth, and had him hanging on in the next session, while he blasted away with both hands. In the end, Lew made it to the last bell and Tony won the unanimous decision.
