GYPSY JOE
24-0, BEATS DIVERONICA

Philly boxing phenom Gypsy Joe Harris won a 10-round points decision against Dick DiVeronica, on this day in 1968.

The Arena bout was Gypsy's 24th straight win, as well as his television debut.  The future looked bright for Harris, but the end of his career was secretly looming. In fact, he would only fight one more time after facing DiVeronica. In August of 1968, he lost a 12-round decision to Emile Griffith. During the physical exam for his following fight, the doctor discovered that he was blind in the right eye. As a result, his license was lifted and he never fought again. So today we celebrate Gypsy Joe's final ring victory, and wonder what other big bouts may have been out there for him.
