HOPKINS UNIFIES MIDDLE-WEIGHT
CROWN;
ONE BELT
 TO GO

On this day in 2001, North Philly's Bernard Hopkins won a 12-round decision over Keith Holmes to add the WBC middleweight title to his long-standing IBF honors.

The bout was held at Madison Square Garden and was the first step in a tournament to crown an undisputed 160-pound champ. Hopkins used his smart boxing style to win the fight easily.

One month later, Felix Trinidad would go on to defeat William Joppy to take the WBA middleweight title and set up the final match against Hopkins. That bout took place in September of 2001 and Hopkins unified the title with the most impressive win of his career. The victory made him a  legitimate boxing star and moved  him onto a course for major fights and big, big bucks.
