EDDIE COOL BEATS CHAMP LOU AMBERS

On this day in 1936, Eddie Cool, the Tacony Flash, scored a surprise victory over reigning world lightweight champion Lou Ambers at the Arena in West Philly. The close 10-round decision was the career highlight of the great but forgotten Philadelphia fighter. But Ambers' brand new title was not on the line that night. Too bad. The win vaulted Cool to a number one ranking, but his display of skill, speed and toughness over the thirty minutes of fighting proved that he was an opponent to be avoided. And so, avoided he was for the remainder of his career. He never got the chance to battle for the crown, despite holding the bragging rights over Ambers, who held the belt for two years. Cool continued to fight for three more years, posting an overall record of 89-28-14 with 15 KOs.
