MTAGWA  STOPS  BROWN  IN

SOUTH  PHILLY  STEAMROLL

August 2nd saw Rogers Mtagwa defend his USBA featherweight championship with a 4th round KO of Kansas City's Alvin Brown at South Philly's New Alhambra. The little crowd-pleaser delivered the KO that the full house was desperate for - after four entertaining but full-limit bouts, on a sweltering evening. The abbreviated affair was Mtagwa's second straight 4th round stoppage. His last defense came in the same ring on June 16 when he waged wild war with Art Simonyan and came out on top in less than 12 minutes.

New trainer Bobby Boogaloo Watts, in just his second outing with Rogers, has yet to plug all the holes in Matagwa's defense, but the 70's slickster's work is evident, in the

clearly improving South-Philly-Tanzanian. Where the Simonyan fight was a crazy slugfest, this scrap was different. Mtagwa slipped many punches that in the past, he would have caught. However, the big  difference in this fight, was Mtagwa's strength and power. Every time he landed on Brown, he moved him. It was apparent early on that this KO was coming. As things got rough, Brown desperately tried to keep the little steamroller off him by cracking Mtagwa with some very hard shots. Rogers, in perpetual forward motion, took the shots and chased the KO, as Boogaloo sucked in his breath. But late in the fourth, a clubbing right hand to the ear dropped Brown in his own corner. He was counted out, as his cornermen simultaneously waved it off. The official time was 3:06.

This was Mtagwa's fourth appearance and second main event at the New Alhambra. The South Philly fight club, with the ghosts of the city's great boxing history looking on from large banners displayed on the east wall, has become Mtagwa's home field. This nationally televised (ESPN2) match hopefully set the stage for a 126-pound showdown at the venue between Rogers and the undefeated "American Boy" Jason Litzau of St. Paul, MN.

The crowd was loaded with notable boxing celebs such as Joey Giardello, Kitten Hayward, Tim Witherspoon, Charles Brewer, Dick Turner, and up-start stars Simon Carr, Gabe Rosado, Eric Hunter, Chazz Witherspoon, & Oaktree Brown.
