FREDDY SAMMONS,
LINWOOD LARRUPER,
PASSES AT 91

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our friend, Freddy Sammons. Sammons was an amateur and professional boxer who was born in Philadelphia, but grew up in the Linwood section of Lower Chichester, PA. As an amateur lightweight, Sammons was the runner up in both the 1939 & 1940 Philadelphia Diamond Belt Tournament. After serving in WWII, Sammons turned professional as a welterweight in 1943 and posted a 19-8-2 pro record through 1948. In addition to his local appearances at the Olympia, Met, Arena, Convention Hall & Cambria, Sammons also made starts at the Boston Gardens and Madison Square Garden. After his retirement from the ring, he worked for Westinghouse Corporation. Sammons was a PA Boxing Hall of Famer, and an active member of the VBA. Freddy died Saturday, 4/18/09, four years after his wife Agatha. He was 91, and will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him.
