PHILLY BOXING HISTORY NEWS & NOTES ESPN2 comes to town this week to broadcast two bouts on Friday night's card at the South Philly Arena. The main event features Matt Godfrey (18-1) & Shawn Hawk (18-0-1) in a 12-round cruiserweight bout. Both 200-pounders have similar records, but Hawk has 6 more KOs (16 to 10). The co-feature, Shaun George v. Chris Henry, pits two more rising cruisers in a 10-rounder. George is the guy who handled Chris Byrd in a 175-lb fight a year ago, and we know Henry as the light-heavy beaten by Yusaf Mack earlier this year. Both televised bouts are good, but you have to dig beneath them to find the "Philly" on this show. Tony Ferrante takes on Billy Bailey & Derek Ennis faces John Mackey in 8-rounders. The remainder of the card is filled with local talent in 4-round bouts... Our favorite cruiserweight, former champ, Steve Cunningham, returns to the ring Saturday (7/11) in a non-televised fight against Wayne Braithwaite. The winner earns a shot at Adamek... There is now talk that prospect Gabriel Rosado (12-3) will take a big step up against ranked jr. middleweight contender Alfred Angulo (15-1) on August 7th in a 10-round ESPN2 bout. Although their records are similar, Angulo has deeper experience, especially as an amateur. But it's a big chance for Gabe to show what he's got, and he's no stranger to tough match-ups. More on this one to come... |
