BRISCOE AWARDS HONOR |
||||
The 4th Annual Briscoe Awards were presented Monday night and once again honored the best of the Philadelphia boxing scene. A large crowd gathered at the VBA Club in Port Richmond to celebrate the boxers and accomplishments that topped 2010. Two-time IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham led the class as the "2010 Philly Fighter of the Year". It was his second win as Fighter of the Year, having taken the same honors for 2007. His win this year made him the first 2-time Briscoe winner. Derek "Pooh" Ennis and "King" Gabriel Rosado both took home Briscoe Awards for their classic 12-round war, which was named the "2010 Philly Fighter of the Year". Ennis won the fight, but both boxers got the "Briscoe". Dhafir Smith won a special Briscoe Award for his "Upset of the Year", a unanimous decision victory over former world champion Jeff Lacy. Smith defied all odds by going onto Lacy's home turf and pulling the most surprising win of 2010. Amateur star Damon Allen, Jr. won the "Everett Brothers Award" which is given by Eddie Everett and Mike Everett in the name of their deceased brother Tyrone and their family's great boxing tradition. In addition to Cunningham, Ennis, Rosado, Smith, and Allen, the star-studded crowd also included Hall of Famer Joltin' Jeff Chandler, Henry "Toothpick" Brown, Sidney "Sweet Pea" Adams, Hall of Fame promoter J Russell Peltz, Carmen Bartolomeo, Billy Abel, Fred Druding, current stars like Garrett Wilson, Ray Robinson, Greg Hackett, Yusaf Mack, Simon "One Punch" Carr, trainers Buster Custus, Billy Briscoe, Bozy Ennis, & Willie Folk, promoter Brittany Rogers, boxing writers Jack Obermayer, George Hanson, Ken Hissner, & Gary Purfield, publicist Marc Abrams, referees Steve Smoger & Vic de Wysocki, judge Joe Pasquale, past Briscoe Winners Gee Culmer & Lenny DeVictoria, Khalil Farah, VBA President Charles Sgrillo, PA Hall of Fame Chairman John Gallagher, historian Chuck Hasson, and many boxing fans.
