The sad news came Tuesday that local boxing trainer, cut man, and Shuler Gym fixture, Willie Folk died after spending a little more than one month in the hospital after suffering a stroke in July. Willie will be sorely missed, but always remembered for his great stories, sense of humor, love & knowledge of boxing, and all his efforts with numerous Philadelphia boxers. Willie worked as a cut man for most of the Shuler team, and could always be found working their corners during the fight, and hanging in the dressing room afterward. But Willie's "office" was the Shuler Boxing Gym in West Philly, where he could be found everyday, sitting in that little chair at ringside. There he wrapped countless hands, studied the boxers in the ring, and held court with everyone who came in. He was approachable, friendly, and ready & willing to talk. Willie was a friend and I'll miss him, even though he always called me Dave - no matter how many times I told him that my name was John. RIP Backdoor Willie.
