Junior welterweight
champion Danny “Swift” Garcia, 28-0, 16 KOs, held an open
training session for the media on Wednesday afternoon at his
DSG Boxing Gym in Philadelphia. Garcia fights
fellow-Pennsylvanian “Lightning” Rod Salka, 19-3, 3 KOs, in
a 10-round, 142-pound non-title bout at the Barclays Center
in Brooklyn, NY on August 9th.
Garcia and his father /
trainer Angel Garcia spoke with the media and conducted a
lengthy workout.

DANNY GARCIA:
“I’m leading my way up,” Garica said about the 142-pound
catch-weight for the upcoming bout. “Hopefully this is the
fight that’s leading me up to 147. (It will) make me
stronger as a fighter, building me up and getting me ready
for welterweight. I’m still the 140-pound champion, so I
can’t really say this is my last fight at 140. If something
comes along that’s worth it, I’ll definitely fight at 140
again.”

“I always gun for the
knockout," Garcia said. "I need a knockout. I haven’t had
a knockout since the Morales fight in Brooklyn. I’m back in
Brooklyn (against Salka), and I’m looking to get another
knockout.”

ANGEL GARCIA:
“I’m not saying the guy is easy,” Angel said about their
opponent. “I’m never going to say that. We’re still going
to prepare. We’re still going to train hard. He’s still
running the miles he supposed to run. He still comes to the
gym at the certain time he’s supposed to be here. And he’s
looking better than ever. When you get the kind of
negative media like he got for the last fight (Mauricio
Herrera), what happens is the person you’re ready to fight
in the future pay the consequences. That’s why they say you
can be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. He (Salka) is
in the wrong predicament right now. He’s going to pay the
consequences on the 9th, because innocent people pay. And
he’s going to pay. Not because we hate him. Because he’s
in the wrong place at the wrong time.” |
