THE HISTORY OF THE MET

Story by John DiSanto

During the 1940s & 1950s, The Met (Metropolitan Opera House) was one of Philly's premiere boxing venues. However the place dried up as a fight venue in 1954. Before long it went completely dark. However in December 2018, after a complete restoration, the place reopened with a Bob Dylan concert.

Then early the following year, boxing made its big comeback at the venue after 64 long years. Hard Hitting Promotions became the new house (boxing) promoter and staged three shows in 2019. Prior to the comeback, The Toppi family (owner Jimmy Sr. and promoter Jimmy Jr.) hosted 193 fight cards between 1939 and 1954 there. At its peak, The Met presented fights every week.
