PHILADELPHIA – Former middleweight champion Joey Giardello would have turned 90 years old on July 16th, and to prove that he is gone but not forgotten, family, friends and members of the Philly boxing community gathered to mark the occasion at the site of the Joey Giardello Statue in South Philadelphia. The event included spoken tributes to Giardello and concluded with the presentation of a boxing glove-shaped birthday cake while the group sang “Happy Birthday” to the beloved champ. The larger than life-sized bronze statue, which was dedicated in 2011, is located in the East Passyunk neighborhood of South Philly, and was the first such monument to a real-life boxer in the city that has produced numerous boxing greats. Giardello passed away in 2008 at age 78. |
