[EDITOR'S NOTE: Joey Dawejko held an open media day workout at the Joe Hand Boxing Gym in Bensalem, PA, on Wednesday afternoon in advance of his return to the ring at Parx Casino on Thursday, September 1st. Photographer Darryl Cobb Jr. interviewed the popular local heavyweight and captured his open workout with his award-winning camera.]

DARRYL COBB JR: Why did you decide to fight again after announcing your retirement earlier this year?

JOEY DAWEJKO:  "
I don’t need to fight anymore, but I want to fight. It’s in my blood. Russell Peltz called me and said, 'Why don’t you fight in Philly?' It felt like a good idea, and that's why I did it."

COBB: You recently took on Russell Peltz as your advisor. How did that conversation go?

DAWEJKO:  "
It was a good conversation. Russell’s the best mind in boxing. So it was a no-brainer for me when he contacted me. We worked a deal out and here we are."

COBB:  It seems like the landscape of the heavyweight division is wide open. Do you have bigger plans (beyond this fight)?

DAWEJKO:  "
I need to put a couple of wins together and then hopefully get a bigger name and get a bigger fight for some money. We’ll see what happens. (I have to) put wins back to back and then figure all that out."

COBB: What is your opinion of the current heavyweight division?

DAWEJKO:
"My opinion of the heavyweight division has always been the same. I feel it’s exciting. You’ve got different kinds of guys. Who would have though Usyk would have been able to defeat Anthony Joshua twice the way he did? You’ve got good upcoming guys, guys that have been there for a while that are still holding weight. It’s exciting to me."

COBB:  Who are the new faces in your corner?

DAWEJKO:
"My trainer, Mikey Weaver, we go way back. Since I was a little kid – he’s older than me – so he was always in the gym and I always looked up to him. We were at the same gym, Harrogate (Boxing Club), back in the day. We traveled a lot together to different gyms for sparring. Actually before I had the talk with Russell Peltz, me and Mike talked. He said (I should) just come into the gym and just work out. I thought, ‘you know what?, that’s a good idea.’ So, that’s what I did."

COBB:  You look in great shape. How has camp been?

DAWEJKO:  "
Camp’s been good. I’ve been working hard and sparring. Mike knows my style. We pretty much grew up together in the gym. So, it was an easy fit between us. Camp’s been great with us."

COBB:  Where have you been training?

DAWEJKO:  "I’m training at Team Chaos Boxing Gym off Woodhaven Road (in Northeast Philly). That’s where I’ve been training."
