JIMMY LOOKS YOUNG AGAIN,
BEATS STINSON AT SANDS

Come-backing former title challenger and top contender Jimmy Young won a surprising and impressive victory against up and coming Marvin Stinson, on this day in 1981. Young, fighting for the second time since his loss to Gerry Cooney one year prior, looked like he might still have enough gas left in his tank to make one more run at the heavyweight division's big time.

This time out, Young punched the clock and then began punching Stinson for almost a full ten rounds. He did take two coffee breaks in rounds four and eight. But it was all Young except for these two refueling sessions. He started the fight by dropping Stinson in the very first round, and showed some uncharacteristic aggressiveness in the bout. Was this the same Jimmy Young? He hammered Stinson in the third round using effective right uppercuts, and sharp two-handed combinations. Young appeared to be going for the knockout. But he was in with a tough customer, even if Marvin wasn't having his best day.

Stinson looked listless in the fight and only seemed to make headway when Young took his little rests. In round five, Marvin fought through a badly cut left eye that perhaps hampered his efforts the rest of the way. But it was Jimmy Young, his career seemingly lost as of late, who came to fight, and came to win. He did so with ease. It was one of those days at work when nothing too surprising gets thrown at you, and the day passes a little faster than usual. Yes, Young made it to the end of this work day, alright. And when the whistle blew, he had himself a 10-round unanimous decision victory.
