GIARDELLO STATUE SET FOR UNVEILING SATURDAY The long-awaited statue of middleweight champion Joey Giardello will be unveiled in a public ceremony on Saturday May 21, at 1:00 PM. The bronze and granite monument was successfully installed at its permanent South Philly location (E. Passyunk Avenue, S. 13th Street and Mifflin Street) on Wednesday. Now it sits, ready to go, wrapped in cloth and plastic, just waiting for the big moment on Saturday. The artwork was created by Carl LeVotch for the Giardello Statue Project, a non-profit partnership between PhillyBoxingHistory.com, the Veteran Boxers Association and the Harrowgate Boxing Club. The monument honors Giardello plus other South Philly boxers and key South Philly boxing landmarks. On Saturday, the statue will be dedicated and unveiled by Giardello's family, friends and fans. PARKING INFO: If you plan to come out for the unveiling, please note that in addition to street parking, you can park your car either at St. Agnes Hospital for $5 at Broad & McKean Street (about one block from the statue site) or park for free at Neumann-Goretti High School at 1736 S. 10th Street (a few blocks from the statue site).
