Erislandy Lara made quick work of Millville's Thomas "Cornflake" LaManna Saturday night in Carson, CA. The scheduled 12-round bout for the vacant WBA middleweight title was an early preliminary fight in support of the PPV heavyweight clash between Andy Ruiz and Chris Arreola. Southpaw Lara stepped right out in round one and began tagging LaManna with straight left hands. LaManna took the first few shots flush on the face, and the third punch started a trickle of blood to flow from LaManna's nose.
A moment later, Lara tossed slightly arched left that slammed against LaManna's ear and the NJ boxer fell to the canvas. He hit the floor with a thud, and referee Thomas Taylor stopped the fight without a count. The official call was a knockout at the 1:20 mark of round one. The victory earned Lara, 28-3-3, 16 KOs, the vacant WBA middleweight belt. The Houston-based Cuban is the former IBF & WBA junior middleweight champion. It was LaManna's first try at a world title. His record slipped to 30-5-1, 12 KOs. The bout was broadcast live by FOX, prior to the PPV portion of the card.
In the main event, former champion Andy Ruiz came off the floor in round two to score a 12-round unanimous decision over Chris Arreola. The scores were 117-110 and 118-109 twice.
