After four years as a pro, lightweight Nahir Albright started 2021 with a record of 8-1. That's nine fights in four years. However during 2021, promoter Rodney Rice kept him very busy, and Albright made six starts in the year. He fought in February, March, April, May, July, and September, posting six wins, five of them by knockout. His year started with a couple of warm up fights against modest-record fighters, but by fight three, Albright began knocking off boxers with pretty records and in most cases, more experience.

In his third 2021 fight, he defeated Dante Cox (6-1) by third-round TKO. Albright followed that with an eight-round stoppage of warhorse Cosme Rivera, a 77-bout veteran who had challenged for a world title and won a few regional belts along the way. Sure, Rivera had been on a bit of a losing streak, but Albright's win, given he only had 12 fights to his credit at the time, was impressive. Next, Albright knocked off Jeremy Hill, 15-1, 10 KOs, by eight-round unanimous decision. In that fight, Nahir picked up his first piece of hardware, the NABA-USA lightweight strap in the process. Finally, Albright scored a sixth round TKO over another 15-1, 10 KO prospect, Michael Dutchover. The fight was carried on a PPV streaming platform and helped Albright crack the rankings.

To say the least, Nahir Albright made his mark in 2021 and put himself on the map with his excellent accomplishments. And that is exactly what the "Breakout Fighter" award is all about. He also recently landed a February spot on Showtime's ShowBox series. So, clearly Albright is on his way.

To add to his luster, Albright has also shown that he can sing, performing the National Anthem and other songs at several RDR shows - often on cards that he also fought on. His singing did NOT influence the choice for this award, but that talent is an added value that he happily provides local boxing fans. Congratulation to Nahir "Woo" Albright!  See you at the Briscoe Awards later this year.

More Briscoe Award winners will be announced over the next several days. The Briscoe Awards event will be held in the Spring, location and date to be announced in the near future.
