FUNERAL SET FOR ROGER RUSSELL

The funeral service for South Philly boxing legend Roger Russell has been set for next Monday, July 11, 2022. The former heavyweight boxer passed away on Saturday morning, July 1, 2022. As an amateur, Russell won the 1965 national AAU amateur light heavyweight championship. He turned pro in 1965 as a 175-pounder, but most of his career came at heavyweight. He fought many top names, including Floyd Patterson, George Foreman, Duane Bobick, Richie Kates, Zora Foley, Roy Williams, Bernardo Mercado, James J. Woody, Bunny Johnson, and Billy Freeman. The highlight victory of his professional career was a 1967, ten-round decision over Leotis Martin at the Arena in West Philly. Russell fought between 1965 and 1978 and retired with a pro record of 12-18-2, 4 KOs. He entered the PABHOF in 2015. Russell's funeral service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022, at The White House of Rick's Funeral & Cremation Services, 109 W Tabor St., Philadelphia, PA 19120. The viewing is from 10:00-11:00 AM, followed by the service at 11:00 AM. Masks are required.
